Fraser Forster is set to make his first Premier League appearance since 2019 in tonight’s fixture against Liverpool.
This comes after news broke that Southampton number one, Alex McCarthy had tested positive for Covid-19.
McCarthy had been in good form, keeping 7 clean sheets so far this season including 3 in his last 5 games.
His absence will undoubtedly be a blow for The Saints, although it was confirmed that he was the only player in the squad to test positive.
Ralph Hasenhüttl has hinted at Forster’s return saying “I think Fraser is a very good alternative…He really wants to play now and was waiting for his chance.”
This will be Forster’s first Premier League appearance since May 2019, where he suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of West Ham.
The 32 year old spent last season on loan at former club Celtic where he made 28 league appearances.
It was ultimately a successful loan spell, with Neil Lennon’s side winning their 51st Scottish League title.
Southampton have enjoyed a good start to the campaign and currently lie 9th in the league table.
Fraser Forster has also kept a clean sheet in four of his last five matches against Liverpool, which could give the keeper some confidence on his return.

Stoke City are facing a crisis in the goalkeeper department ahead of their Quarter Final clash against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup tonight.
The Potters currently have 4 senior goalkeepers ruled out of the tie against Jose Mourinho’s side.
Angus Gunn, Adam Davies & Niki Mäenpää are all injured whereas Joe Bursik is cup tied after being recalled from his loan at Doncaster.
This leaves Stoke City gaffer Michael O’Neill with the choice of only 2 goalkeepers who are available for selection.
Andy Lonergan (37) & Blondy Nna Noukeu (19) are the 2 keepers in contention to start the match.
Both are out of match practice with Noukeu having never made a senior appearance and Lonergan’s last outing being almost 2 years ago.
O’Neill has shown faith in the pair though, saying “Andy is fine, he’s trained the last couple of days…Blondy has been around the first team now for the best part of nine months and he’s done very well“.
Since O’Neill took over in 2019, Stoke have kept the most clean sheets in Europe’s top 5 leagues (21).
The goalkeeping trio of Gunn, Davies & Bursik have set the bar high so far this season with their performances.
Lonergan and Noukeu will have to be prepared as they face the possibility of coming up against one of the worlds deadliest duos in Son & Kane.

Sam Johnstone was the hero last night as West Brom managed to hold out for a 1-1 draw against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
The Baggies went into the match as the underdogs with no one giving them much of a chance.
A goal on the half hour mark from İlkay Gündoğan made what seemed like an impossible task for Slaven Bilić’s side even more daunting.
It took just 13 minutes for West Brom to draw level though, through a Ruben Dias own goal following a shot towards goal from Semi Ajayi.
Manchester City dominated the game with 26 shots and 77% possession in the 90 minutes, but West Brom weathered the storm with their goalkeeper mainly to thank.
Johnstone was easily the standout performer for his side making 7 saves in total, including a crucial stop in added time to deny Raheem Sterling from close range.
He has played every Premier league game so far this season delivering consistent performances in what has been a tough return to the Premier League for The Baggies.
The West Brom keepers heroics saw them earn their first point at the Etihad since 2005 and end a 13 game losing streak against the Manchester side.

Petr Cech played his first game since retiring, last night as Chelsea’s development side beat Tottenham 3-2.
It was not the start that Cech would’ve been hoping for though, as The Blues found themselves 2-0 down within the first 20 minutes.
The 38 year old said stated on Instagram that he felt “strange” during the first period of the match from being out of action for so long.
After this rough patch early on, Cech said that his “‘match system’ reappeared” and that “it was great to have that special feeling again”.
Chelsea hit back after half time with goals in the 61st & 63rd minutes to make it 2-2.
Premier League winner Danny Drinkwater & Spurs’ Alfie Devine were both sent off minutes later, leading to a ruckus on the pitch, with Cech at the centre of it.
An 88th minute goal saw Chelsea rescue the 3 points and go top of the Premier League 2.
This was the Czech internationals first match in 565 days following his retirement from the game.
He played his last professional game for Arsenal in the 2019 Europe league final where The Gunners lost, coincidently to Chelsea.

Uhlsport have released 100% waterproof goalkeeper gloves to help combat the elements in the cold winter months.
As a goalkeeper we have all experienced the unpleasant feeling of cold, wet hands on a bleak winter morning.
Thankfully, the team down at Uhlsport have this issue covered with the Eliminator Aqua Outdry model.
Uhlsport have implemented OutDry technology to produce this essential piece of goalkeeping equipment.
OutDry uses a one piece patented construction process that creates a waterproof breathable barrier.
This impenetrable layer is heat bonded directly to the outer fabric, leaving no seams, no gaps, and no way for water to get in.
Compare that to traditional waterproof technology. Water gets in and stays in, collecting in the space between the inner and outer layers, making them heavy and wet.
OutDry improves fit and dexterity, keeping you drier, lighter and more comfortable.
Watch the video below to see how the OutDry technology works!
Below we look at some of the key features of the glove and its different components.
PALM: Patented AQUASOFT with special aqua additives
BACKHAND: 3D embossed latex CUT (classic cut)
GLOVE BODY: Comfortable textile for breathability & comfort
FASTENING: Latex strap
If that wasn’t enough the gloves also have an ergonomically pre-shaped cut, 3D embossed SCHOCKZONE & a full neoprene bandage.
The 100% waterproof goalkeeper gloves are available now at Just Keepers for a discounted price of £63.00!
