Pepe Reina became the 3rd most capped player in European football as Lazio beat Zenit St Petersburg 3-1 in the Champions League group stages.

Reina made his 174th European appearance last night allowing him to surpass Barcelona legend Xavi (173).

Only Cristiano Ronaldo (180) and goalkeeping compadre Iker Casillas (186) have played more times.

Pepe Reina first appeared on the European stage for Barcelona in the 2000 UEFA Cup.

He would go on to play for 6 different clubs in the respective competitions including Villareal, Napoli & AC Milan.

His longest and most successful period on this stage was at Liverpool where he won the UEFA Super Cup in 2006.

Last nights result saw Lazio cement their place in 2nd just behind Borussia Dortmund in Group F.

The Spaniard will make his 175th European appearance if he starts next week where Lazio will be looking to knock Dortmund off of top spot.

A win for Reina & his teammates will confirm their place in the Champions League knockout stages for the first time.

Pope Heroics Earn Burnley First Win of the Season

Nick Pope produced a save of the season contender last night as Burnley gained their first 3 points of the season.

A Chris Wood goal in the opening ten minutes proved enough for the Clarets in the end , beating Crystal Palace 1-0.

It was Pope that took the plaudits though, after producing a point-blank save in the 89th minute to deny Benteke.

The Burnley keeper was called into action on numerous occasions throughout the game but stood strong each time.

5 saves, a clean sheet and a MOTM worthy performance saw Sean Dyche’s side move out of the relegation zone and secure a long awaited win.

It has been a good couple of weeks for Pope who made his 4th appearance for the national team in the last international break.

He is still yet to concede a goal as an England goalkeeper in his 225 minutes played.

Gareth Southgate was full of praise for the shot-stopper and last nights performance will have reaffirmed his thoughts.

Burnley travel to Manchester on Saturday to take on Pep Guardiola’s men who have been somewhat underwhelming this season.

Nick Pope and his teammates may be quietly confident after yesterdays result and will be keen to cause an upset.

“Gianluigi Buffon” by Doha Stadium Plus is licensed under CC BY 2.0

On this day 25 years ago, a 17 year old Gianluigi Buffon made his professional debut for Parma in the Serie A.

The Italian shot-stopper’s first game was against none other than European giants AC Milan.

AC Milan were at the height of world football in 1995 with the likes of Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini & George Weah amongst their ranks.

Milan would end up winning the Italian title in this year after finishing runners-up in the Champions League the season before.

Nevertheless, Buffon managed to hold their star studded squad at bay earning a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw.

Buffon would go on to play 8 more games in the 1995/96 season seeing Parma finish 6th and securing qualification for the UEFA cup.

In the years after, he consolidated his position as Parma’s number one winning the UEFA Cup, Italian Cup and Italian Super Cup during his 6 years at the club.

Only 2 years after making his professional debut for Parma, Buffon made his debut for the Italian national team at 19 years of age.

With so much success so early on in his career Gigi was signed by Juventus in 2001…and the rest is history.

Andre Blake was named as the 2020 MLS goalkeeper of the year yesterday, off the back of an impressive season with Philadelphia Union.

Blake received a resounding 44.12% of votes in total whilst New England’s Matt Turner was some distance off in 2nd with 12.21%.

This was Blake’s second time winning the award after picking up the accolade in 2016 as well.

He is also the only goalkeeper amongst five finalists for this years Landon Donovan MLS MVP award.

This is likely down to the instrumental part that Blake played as Philadelphia won their first ever Supporters’ Shield.

Philadelphia Union topped the Eastern conference with 47 points, just pipping Toronto FC to top spot.

The Jamaican international kept 8 clean sheets in his sides road to MLS glory making 24 appearances in all competitions.

His side can now look forward to the MLS Cup where they will play in the round of 16 on November the 25th.

Andre Blake and Philly will be hoping to build on this seasons success by winning the MLS cup for the first time in the clubs history.

David Marshall Confirms Scotland’s Place in Euro 2021

“File:David Marshall 2019.jpg” by Анна Джалалян is licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0

David Marshall secured Scotland’s place in Euro 2021 following a heroic save in a penalty shootout against Serbia.

Scotland looked set to win the qualifier in normal time after Ryan Christie gave them the lead in the 52nd minute.

Marshall and his defence stood resolute for much of the game, and it looked as if they would see the game out within the 90 minutes.

Disaster struck in the last minute as Real Madrid’s Luka Jović equalised for Serbia with a headed goal, sending the tie to extra time.

Despite a gutting late blow, Steve Clarke’s side managed to weather the storm and take it all the way to the dreaded penalty shootout.

4 well took penalties from each side saw it come down to Kenny McLean as Scotland’s 5th taker.

McLean dispatched the penalty with confidence, piling the pressure onto Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrović who was the last to step up for Serbia.

Mitrović fired the spot kick towards the bottom right corner but Marshall was equal to it, getting down well to deny the striker.

Their was a moment of disbelief as the Derby keeper waited for the referee to confirm the validity of the penalty before he was engulfed into a sea of blue shirts.

David Marshall’s heroics mean that Scotland will be heading to their first major tournament in over 20 years this summer.

Scotland have been drawn in group D alongside England in which will no doubt be a fiercely contested match.

The nations will face off on the 18th of June at Wembley Stadium with the 2 sets of fans already getting excited for this big fixture.

Nick Pope to Start Tonight Against Republic of Ireland

Image

Nick Pope is set to gain his 4th cap for England tonight against the Republic of Ireland in a friendly fixture at Wembley.

Gareth Southgate confirmed yesterday, that Pope would be starting the match as the pair faced the media at St. George’s Park.

Although Southgate confirmed Pickford as the England number one only last week, he was full of praise for the Burnley keeper when speaking to the press.

The England gaffer stated that Pope “is just behind Jordan” when talking about the rankings of the England goalkeepers..

Alongside this Southgate showed his admiration for the keeper on a personal level as well, saying “We couldn’t be happier with him as a guy to work with”.

Nick Pope is yet to concede a goal in his 3 matches for the Three Lions and will be hoping to extend this run to 4 before the end of tonight.

He is clearly no stranger to a clean sheet after keeping 15 last season for the Clarets, just being pipped to the golden glove award by Ederson.

Despite his perfect record for England, Pope accepted that Pickford was the number one at this moment in time.

Pope will be eager to take his chance tonight after admitting that he would have to work hard to displace the Everton keeper.

England’s fixture tonight is the first of three in this international break as they warmup for UEFA Nations League matches against Belgium and Iceland.

Highest scoring goalkeeper of all time, Rogério Ceni was unveiled yesterday as the new head coach of Brazilian side Flamengo.

Ceni’s announcement as head coach came only 24 hours after Flamengo terminated the contract of manager Domenec Torrent.

Rogério Ceni – Goalscoring Keeper

In his playing career, Ceni was more well known for scoring goals than keeping them out.

His career spanned over 20 years, with the Brazilian keeper making over 1000 appearances for São Paulo scoring 131 goals.

He was assigned as the chief penalty and free kick taker for his side allowing him to become the first professional goalkeeper to reach a century of goals.

Alongside scoring 131 goals, he also won 9 major honours in Brazils top tier.

On the international stage, Ceni made 18 appearances and was part of the legendary 2002 Brazil squad that won the World Cup.

Managerial Career

Rogerio Ceni started his managerial career at São Paulo in 2017 after retiring from the club just 2 years prior.

It wasn’t to be for Ceni at his former club who lasted an underwhelming 183 days in the position as head coach.

The Brazilian took the reigns at Serie B side Fortaleza the following season, which saw the start of a more successful period for the ex goalkeeper.

Fortaleza won the Serie B title in Rogerio Ceni’s first year in charge earning them promotion to Brazil’s top tier.

Flamengo appoint the 47 year old after 3 years in management where he has been the gaffer of 3 different Brazilian clubs.

This is a big opportunity for the former goalkeeper who steps into the most supported club in Brazil with over 40 million followers.

Rogerio Ceni will hope that he can take Flamengo (who are currently third) back to the top of the table and win his first Brazilian Serie A title as a manager.
