Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson made his debut for Arsenal last night in a 3-0 victory at home to Dundalk in the Europa League.

Whilst Rúnarsson remained relatively untroubled for the 90 minutes, he was called into action early on in the game. Dundalk’s Patrick McEleney fired a shot in from distance forcing the Arsenal debutant to make a good save down to his right.

Other than this it was a comfortable debut for Rúnarsson and his Arsenal side as they coasted to victory.

Arsenal fans would have been pleased to see their new signing commanding his area well on a couple of occasions, claiming two corners with ease in the first half.

The Icelandic international also looked happy to have the ball at his feet and was quick in his distribution to initiate Arsenal attacks.

Rúnarsson arrived at the Emirates in the summer transfer window, after a reported fee of £1.8m was agreed between Arsenal and his previous club, Dijon FCO.

The 25 year old was signed as a replacement for Emiliano Martínez who caught the eye of Aston Villa, following an impressive end to the 2019/20 season for Arsenal.

Despite being only 25, Rúnarsson has made over 100 club appearances and has 6 caps to his name for the Iceland senior team. The young keeper will no doubt provide some healthy competition for current number one, Bernd Leno.

Arsenal travel to Old Trafford on Sunday where they will be hoping to regain some momentum in the Premier League after a string of disappointing results.

Anatoliy Trubin Keeps Inter Milan at Bay

Football Soccer Europe - Free photo on Pixabay

Shakhtar Donetsk keeper Anatoliy Trubin put in an impressive performance last night as his side held Inter Milan to a 0-0 draw.

This was Shakhtar’s second fixture in the champions league this season after a surprise 3-2 win against Real Madrid in their opening game.

19 year old goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin stole the plaudits last night after a wonder save to deny a Romelu Lukaku freekick.

The U21 Ukraine international somehow managed to get his fingertips to Lukaku’s thunderbolt of a strike and tip the ball onto the bar. Lukaku looked on in disbelief as he was certain that his shot was destined for the net.

Trubin also made 3 more saves on the night to maintain Shakhtar’s unbeaten start to the Champions League campaign.

Luís Castro has shown great faith in the young goalkeeper who has started both Champions League games this season against European giants Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

Anatoliy Trubin only made his debut for the senior team last year but has repaid his managers faith in him thus far. It appears that he may now be favoured as number one over veteran, Andriy Pyatov.

36 year old, Pyatov has provided 13 years of service to Shaktar Donetsk, but now may be his time to step aside and allow a new talent to thrive.

Last nights result saw Shakhtar Donetsk remain top of Group B in the Champions League. Despite the odds being against them, Shakhtar are the only team in their group to have won a a game.

Trubin undoubtedly has a bright future and all eyes will be on him again, next week as Shakhtar Donetsk face Borussia Mönchengladbach in their third Champions League group tie.

Check out Anatoliy Trubin’s wonder save below!

Michel Vorm Announces Retirement From Football

37 year old, Michel Vorm announced his retirement from professional football yesterday after 14 years in the game.

Vorm signed his first professional contract at Dutch side, FC Utrecht in 2006. He stated on Instagram that this achievement was more than he could ever have dreamed of as a kid.

He would go on to make over 150 appearances for FC Utrecht over the course of 5 years at the club.

In 2011 the Dutch international was signed by Brendan Rodgers for Swansea City after a fee of £1.5m was agreed with Utrecht.

Michel was not phased by his move to English football and soon consolidated his position as Swansea’s number 1. He also wrote his name into Swansea history as he helped the team to their first Premier League point.

During his time at Swansea he was part of the squad that won the League Cup in the 2012/13 season and made 5 appearances in the clubs first outing in European football.

After 3 memorable seasons with the Welsh side, he moved to North London to play for Tottenham Hotspur in 2014. Spurs gaffer at the time, Mauricio Pochettino payed over £5m to secure the Dutchman’s services.

Michel Vorm made 48 appearances for Tottenham and played a part in Spurs’ famous road to the Champions League final in 2019.

He also made a considerable impact on the international stage with the Netherlands. Vorm was handed his debut for the national team in 2008 and went on to receive 15 caps. In this time he appeared at 2 World Cups (earning a runners up medal in 2010) and 1 EURO competition in 2012.

Michel Vorm finishes his career with over 300 appearances whilst performing on some of the top stages in world football.

He declared his gratitude on social media for the opportunities that he had received saying “I am thankful to play for all these clubs and honoured that I was able to represent my country on international tournaments. Being part of such great history of my country is something I am truly grateful for as well”.

Choosing the Perfect Junior Gloves

Every professional footballer will tell you how important it is to have gear that fits you correctly. From boots to kneepads, every piece of equipment counts. In this respect, gloves are a goalie’s best friend.

If you’re prepping your kid for their first match, here’s a guide to help you find the perfect junior goalkeeper glove.

Three Factors

There are three factors to keep in mind when choosing any goalie glove, and the same goes for junior gloves. First, there’s the size. Then the cut. And, finally, the foam type.

Size

Get your kid a pair of gloves that are too large for their little hands, and the ball will slip right through. Get them a size that’s too small, and discomfort will ruin the game.

With goalie gloves, it’s all about the palm width. This is what makes the glove feel overly tight or too loose – neither of which is ideal.

You can find the glove size on the packaging, but what do these sizes actually mean? Well, size 2 gloves are for small children around the age of five. Size 3 gloves are for children that are six years old. Size 4 is for small children of seven or eight. Size 5 gloves are for children of about nine years of age, while sizes 6 and 7 are for larger children aged between nine and twelve. Sizes 7.5-8 are for juniors of 13 or more years.

Cut

This refers to the stitching and design style for the palm and finger area of a goalie glove. You have a lot to choose from here.

But in truth, there’s no “correct” answer to the question of the cut. It’s all about personal preference. However, we’ve broken down the attributes of some of the most common goalie glove cuts:

  • Roll finger – Often seen as a perfect middle between snug and spacious, traditional and covered with latex
  • Negative – Snug, works great for skinny hands
  • Negative roll – Very snug
  • Flat cut – Spacious with high latex coverage
  • Hybrid – A combination of different cuts
  • Medius cut – Middle fingers negative, outer fingers rolled, spacious toward the outside, snug in the middle
  • Hyla cut – Snug, comfortable, pre-curved, solid ball retention
  • Total flare – Flat middle fingers, flared rolled outer fingers
  • Ultra flat – Snug, flat palm and negative stitching
  • Cresco cut – Spacious, brilliant for smothering the ball

Foam Type

Foam is there to protect your hands. It will certainly absorb any powerful shot but, more importantly, it will protect your thumbs from potential dislocation. There are three foam types with goalie gloves: Contact Grip, Giga Grip, and SuperSoft.

  • Contact Grip – Works brilliantly in wet conditions and offers a ton of resistance
  • Giga Grip – Keeps the hands cushioned and adheres wonderfully
  • SuperSoft – Based on Giga Grip, but cheaper

Goalie Gloves for Your Kid

These were the factors that you should focus on when looking for the perfect junior goalkeeper glove. Keep in mind that your kid will probably have to try out various different pairs to find the ideal match. More than anything, it’s vital that you listen to your kid and test out which glove fits them perfectly.

Ben Foster Gives Insight Into Life as a Professional Keeper

Ben Foster has recently started a new YouTube channel where he gives a fascinating insight into his life as a professional goalkeeper.

The Watford shot stopper vlogs his daily activities, from matchday and training, to cycling which is also a big part of the channel.

His channel, Ben Foster – The Cycling GK has gained over 50,000 subscribers in just 3 weeks. The success of the page is likely down to the behind the scenes content which gives football fans an exclusive insight into a side of his life that they may not have previously been aware of.

On matchdays Foster will place a Gopro in his goal which makes for entertaining viewing. With no fans in the stadium, all of the goalkeepers emotions can be heard loud and clear as he encounters different situations in each match.

In the modern day, professional footballers and athletes in general can often appear watered down due to factors such as media training. Ben Foster offers a refreshing take in this sense as he allows his lively personality to captivate his YouTube audience.

The Watford and England international starred in a 3-1 win against Blackburn last night making 6 saves. This result saw Fosters side move into 3rd place in the Championship with their 4th win of the season. The Hornets will be hoping to gain promotion back to the Premier League after being relegated in 2020.

Petr Cech Named in Chelsea’s Premier League Squad

Retired goalkeeper, Petr Cech has been named in Chelsea’s 25 man squad for the Premier League.

Lampard announced the squad yesterday where the Czech international was a surprise inclusion as the fourth choice keeper. Despite his addition to the squad, Frank Lampard stated that it was only a precautionary measure due to Covid-19.

The 38 year old currently operates as Chelsea’s technical and performance advisor after retiring from his playing career in 2019. Petr Cech’s final game came in the 2019 Europa League final for Arsenal in a 4-1 defeat to previous club, Chelsea.

Although his final professional match ended in disappointment, it was in no way representative of his exceptional footballing career. Cech made over 700 club appearances whilst also representing his national team on 125 occasions.

He became one of the most decorated goalkeepers of all time winning x4 Premier League titles, x5 FA cups, x3 League cups, 1x Champions League & 1x Europa League.

Petr Cech’s Chelsea drew 0-0 last night in their opening Champions League fixture against Sevilla. Summer signing, Édouard Mendy started in goal and managed to keep his 2nd clean sheet in his first two starts for Chelsea.

Lampard announced last night that Mendy is his current number 1 after a strong start for The Blues. With goalkeepers, Kepa and Caballero seemingly ahead of Cech in the pecking order it is unlikely that we will see him feature.

Nonetheless, Cech has impressed Chelsea staff in training and has proved that he could step up to the mark if required. Frank Lampard insists that the decision to bring Petr into the squad is not based on sentiment which may give some Chelsea fans hope that they will see the club legend play again.

Alisson Set For Early Liverpool Return

Liverpool were given a boost yesterday as Klopp confirmed that Alisson was back in light training.

The Liverpool keeper sustained a shoulder injury in a training session at the start of the month. It was first expected that this would keep him out of action for at least four weeks.

Klopp has given Liverpool fans hope after a positive press conference where he suggested that Alisson would be back sooner than expected. Although the manager did not confirm a specific return date there is speculation that it could be before the end of October.

This will come as good news for The Reds who have conceded 9 goals in their last 2 games in Alisson’s absence. Liverpool also suffered further setbacks in defensive options this weekend as Virgil van Dijk was ruled out with a long term injury. Recent events will undoubtedly leave Liverpool fans desperate for the return of Alisson to first team action.

The Brazilian made 37 appearances for Liverpool last season, securing their first top flight title since 1990. In doing so, Alisson kept 17 clean sheets in all competitions which have proved hard to come by for the Merseyside team in recent times.

Liverpool travel to Ajax tomorrow night for their first Champions League fixture of the season. With options currently light in the goalkeeper department it is likely that Liverpool will opt for the experience of Adrián.

San Marino Earn First Ever Away Clean Sheet

San Marino earned their first ever away clean sheet last night in a 0-0 draw against Liechtenstein in the UEFA Nations League.

Their last draw recorded in a competitive match was back in 2014 against Estonia in a EURO 2016 qualifying match. San Marino are also yet to win a competitive fixture on the international stage.

Simone Benedettini was the man between the sticks and contributed to an impressive team performance making 2 saves in the game. San Marino may have even been disappointed not to win the tie after registering a remarkable 16 shots.

The 23 year old has made 6 appearances for the national side, but last nights would likely be the most memorable. His debut for the national side came in 2019 as San Marino suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Belgium.

Benedettini has spent the majority of his career so far playing in the 4th tier of Italian football. It was only in the 2019/20 season that he signed for SS Murata to play in San Marino’s top tier.

Although Benedettini and his teammates may be slightly disappointed not to have grabbed their first competitive victory, they can be proud in what was a historic night for the nation.

Hugo Lloris Becomes 3rd Most Capped French Player

Hugo Lloris became the 3rd most capped French international of all time on Sunday as his side drew 0-0 with Portugal. The Spurs shot stopper put in a solid display where he made 3 saves and ultimately wrote his name into the history books.

Lloris made his 117th appearance in the UEFA Nations League fixture allowing him to surpass Marcel Desailly (116). Only Thierry Henry (123) and Lilian Thuram (142) have appeared more times for the French national team.

His first call up to the senior squad came in 2008 when France played Uruguay in a friendly. Hugo Lloris has gone on to play in 2 EURO competitions as well as 3 World Cups for his country. The 2018 World Cup would prove to be one to remember for Lloris as he captained his nation to their first world title since 1998.

Croatia, who France beat 4-2 in the 2018 final will face Les Bleus again tomorrow night in their final Nations League game of the international break. It will be an important fixture for Lloris & France as they require 3 points if they are to give themselves any chance of topping their group.
