Illan Meslier broke a 14-year-old Premier League record last night, becoming the first U21 goalkeeper to keep 8 clean sheets in a single season.

At just 20 year old, The Frenchman is seen as one of the top prospects in the goalkeeping world.

In this article we take a look at some of the up-and-coming young goalkeepers in the Premier League to keep an eye out for.

Marcelo Pitaluga

Club: Liverpool

Age: 18

Pitaluga was only 17 when he signed for Liverpool from Brazilian side Fluminense in October 2020. The young Brazilian had been recommended by Alisson’s brother who he had worked with in the Fluminense setup. He has already shown promise on the international stage, lifting the U17 FIFA World Cup with Brazil, 2 years ago. The future looks bright for Pitaluga who will hope to follow in the footsteps of fellow compatriot, Alisson.

Arthur Okonkwo

Club: Arsenal

Age: 19

The young academy graduate has been at Arsenal since he was 7 years old and is now setting his sights on challenging for one of the three goalkeeper spots at the club. He has recently started training with the first team and has made multiple appearances for England at U18 level. On first inspection, Okonkwo seems to be the perfect modern keeper standing at 6ft 4in and is comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Ákos Onódi

Club: Aston Villa

Age: 19

Unlike the first 2 goalkeepers on this list, Onódi has a first team appearance to his name. Due to a Covid crisis the young keeper was called upon to face reigning champions Liverpool in the FA Cup. Despite conceding 4 goals in the match he received many plaudits after making a number of good saves in the match. Coincidentally, Onódi had previously been on trial at Liverpool but was unsuccessful. The young Hungarian has also represented his country at U19 level and it may only be a couple of years until we see him in action in the Premier League.

Zan-Luk Leban

Club: Everton

Age: 18

Zan-Luk Leban signed for Everton in 2019 from Polish side FCB Escola Varsovia. The youngster had registered interest from some of Europe’s top teams prior to this, being a part of Barcelona’s academy and having trials at Manchester United. Leban’s Everton career has been hindered by injury’s so far but he is now back between the posts, having played 13 games in the U18 Premier league this season.

Marcus Dewhurst

Club: Sheffield United

Age: 19

Dewhurst is looking to follow a similar path to England keepers Dean Henderson and Aaron Ramsdale who have been given first team opportunities for ‘The Blades’. He only recently returned to Sheffield in January, after a loan spell at League Two Carlisle. Dewhurst has also made an impact on the international stage but not for reasons that would usually be associated with a goalkeeper. The Englishman got on the scoresheet for the U18’s, equalising late on against the Spanish national team.

Illan Meslier on Course to Break Premier League Record

If Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier keeps a clean sheet in tonights fixture against Wolves he will set a new Premier League record.

One more Premier League shutout will earn Meslier his eight of the season in what has been a breakout year for the young French Keeper.

This would give hime the title of the most clean sheets by any Premier League goalkeeper in a single season before their 21st birthday.

The Leeds shotstopper is currently tied with Joe Hart who managed 7 for Manchester City in the 2007/08 season.

Time is ticking for the 20 year old though, who celebrates his 21st birthday on March the 2nd.

Meslier now has only 3 matches against Wolves, Southampton & Aston Villa to break the 14-year-old record.

After already keeping out the likes of Arsenal, Aston Villa & Everton it would come as no surprise to see him reach this milestone

It has been a positive campaign for Meslier so far, who signed for Leeds permanently after an initial loan from FC Lorient .

He has since replaced the experienced Kiko Casilla and been dubbed one of the best young goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Leeds currently sit 11th in the table on their return to the top flight but can leapfrog Arsenal and move into 10th with a win tonight.

Gulácsi Faces Former Side in Champions League Clash

Péter Gulácsi is set to face his former side Liverpool tonight, as RB Leipzig host ‘The Reds’ in the Champions League Round of 16.

Although the Hungarian keeper spent six years in Merseyside and made the matchday squad on 52 occasions, he did not make a senior appearance for the club.

His time in England also included 3 loan spells at Hereford, Hull and 2 consecutive seasons at Tranmere from 2009 to 2011.

Despite not featuring for Liverpool, Gulácsi looks back on his time at the club fondly.

When speaking to The Athletic he said “I have the best memories. Just being at a fantastic club with unbelievably good players was a great experience”.

He also recalled the level of quality that was on display in training sessions, singling out Steven Gerrard & Luis Suárez as some of the best performers.

The 30 year old left Liverpool for Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg in 2013 before signing for Leipzig 2 years later in 2015.

Since then, Gulácsi has become a regular in the number one position and is now a central figure in Julian Nagelsmann’s plans.

This season saw him make his 200th appearance for the club as the German side seek to push Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title.

Nagelsmann’s side beat FC Augsburg this weekend to go within 4 points of the league leaders.

Their focus will now be fully on the Champions League as they seek a first leg victory against Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

The fixture will be played at a neutral venue at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

Guardiola Names Ederson as Possible Penalty Taker

Guardiola number one: Ederson

Pep Guardiola has named number one goalkeeper, Ederson as a possible penalty taker after Gündoğan’s miss from the spot.

Manchester City have struggled from 12 yards this season and have already used four different takers, this season alone.

Gündoğan added to The Cityzens penalty woes this weekend, blazing his spot kick over the bar, in what was (at the time) a crucial moment in the match.

Although he went on to score 2 in a comfortable 4-1 win at Anfield, Guardiola has admitted that the penalty taker situation is a problem.

After the match with Liverpool, Pep said “I’m going to think about Ederson, he might be the taker next time”.

Ederson has also previously stated that he was the best penalty taker at City, adding more fuel to the fire.

Whilst the Brazilian has already kept 13 clean sheets this season, he is also highly regarded for his ability with his feet.

It is therefore, not all that surprising that the gaffer is considering the keeper as an option in the clubs current circumstances.

Last night’s result saw Manchester City go 5 points clear at the top of the Premier League table and 10 points clear of reigning champions, Liverpool.

Ederson swapped his Uhlsport mitts for the Puma ULTRA GRIP 1 HYBRID PRO model as Manchester City took top spot in the Premier League.

Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan is set to make his first appearance for Arsenal this afternoon as they take on Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Ryan signed for Brighton in 2017 and went on to make over 100 appearances for the Seagulls before his move to North London.

Only two other goalkeepers from his nation have now made more Premier League appearances than the 28 year old.

This is our list of the best Aussie keepers that have tested themselves between the posts in England’s top tier.

Mark Schwarzer

PL Appearances: 514

PL Club(s): Middelsbrough, Fulham, Chelsea, Leicester

When talking about Australians in the Premier League, Schwarzer is definitely one of the first names that springs to mind. As well as his impressively long-lasting career, he was a part of the infamous Leicester City squad that won the title in 2016. Schwarzer also made a name for himself on the international stage where he reached over a century of appearances and was named Australian footballer of the year on 2 occasions.

Mark Bosnich

PL Appearances: 208

PL Club(s): Aston Villa, Manchester United, Chelsea

Another Mark on this list is Mark Bosnich who enjoyed some succesfull moments during his time in England. Bosnich won the league cup on two occasions for Aston Villa in 1994 and 1996. He also has a Premier League winners medal to his name where he played 23 matches in a victorious year for the Red Devils.

John Filan

PL Appearances: 75

PL Club(s): Nottingham Forest, Coventry, Blackburn, Wigan

With the 4th most appearances of any Australian goalkeeper in the top flight and a 13 year career is John Filan. His most notable achievement was being a part of the Blackburn Rovers side that lifted the League Cup in 2002.

Brad Jones

PL Appearances: 45

PL Club(s): Middelsbrough, Liverpool

Brad Jones was part of 2 different League cup winning squads, with Middelsbrough in 2004 and Liverpool in 2012. After a 15 year stint in English football, Jones signed for Dutch side NEC Nijmegen in 2016. He now plays his football for Al-Nassr FC in Saudi Arabia.

Adam Federici

PL Appearances: 31

Federici played for several clubs in his career but played his best football at Reading where he spent many years. The 36 year old is also still playing at a proffesional level for Macarthur FC in his home nation.

Deadline Day – Incomings & Outgoings So Far

Deadline day
“File:Mathew Ryan Club Brugge.jpg” by Michel Berix is licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0

Deadline day is upon us and there will undoubtedly be plenty of teams keen on conducting some last minute business in the market.

Below, we take a look at some of the most notable goalkeepers that have already made a move this month.

Mat Ryan – Arsenal (loan)

Mikel Arteta made Mat Ryan his first January signing on a short term loan until the end of the season. The Australian fell out of favour at Brighton and a loan deal was seen as beneficial for both parties.

Andy Lonergan – West Brom (free)

Lonergan is 1 of 3 signings that Allardyce has made so far in the window, arriving from Championship side Stoke City on a free. He will provide some backup for number one, Sam Johnstone as The Baggies aim to escape the relegation zone.

Rob Elliot – Watford (free)

Elliot has been without a club since July 2020 after leaving Newcastle in the Summer. Watford stopper, Ben Foster has been ruled out of recent matches with an injury to his finger meaning that emergency backup was required.

Örjan Nyland – Norwich (free)

Nyland has also been without a club since 2020 where he played a part in Aston Villas Premier League survival. The experienced Norwegian will act as good cover for Tim Krul as Norwich hope to return to the top tier of English football.

Ben Hamer – Swansea (undisclosed)

The 33 year had recently seen a reduction in game time at Huddersfield before securing a move to high flying Swansea. Hamer will provide some good competition for Freddie Woodman as The Swans also set their sights on Premier League football once again.
