Kelleher

Caoimhin Kelleher put in a man of the match performance last night as he made his Champions League debut for Liverpool.

A strong display from the 22 year old saw the Red’s beat Ajax 1-0, securing their spot in the knockout stages.

Curtis Jones put Liverpool 1-0 up in the 58th minute with Kelleher and co managing to hold Erik ten Hag’s men at bay.

It was far from a stroll in the park for the Irishman who had to make 4 saves in total, including a spectacular stop late on to deny the Dutch side.

In doing so Kelleher became the first Irish keeper to keep a clean sheet in the Champions League group stages.

Klopp’s faith in the youngster was ultimately repaid, after an impressive performance in what was an important fixture for the club..

Last night was a big step up for the young keeper who had only played in 4 matches for the senior side in EFL and FA cup fixtures.

Although he was yet to play on the European stage prior to yesterday, he has a Champions league winners medal after being part of the Liverpool squad that lifted the trophy in 2019.

Speaking after the game, Kelleher struggled to hide his excitement saying that he was:

“Over the moon really with how the whole night went…and for the whole team to get the win and to qualify. Just delighted.”
