Peter Schmeichel Makes Premier League Hall of Fame

Peter Schmeichel
Futbol61tstrabzon, CC BY-SA 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Peter Schmeichel was announced today, as the first goalkeeper to make it into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

Schmeichel, along with 6 others, joined Patrick Vieira & Wayne Rooney who were the first inductees of 2022.

Amongst those 6 inducted today, were the likes of Ian Wright, Didier Drogba & Vincent Kompany.

With over 300 Premier League appearances & 128 clean sheets to his name, it came as no surprise to see ‘The Great Dane’ make this exclusive list.

In a Premier League career that spanned over 11 years, it was his perhaps his dominant displays with Manchester United in the 1990’s that earnt him most of his plaudits.

During this period, Schmeichel lifted the Premier League title an impressive 5 times, as well as earning himself a Player of the Season award in 1995/96.

He also enjoyed stints at Aston Villa and previous rivals, Manchester City towards the end of his career.

It was at Aston Villa where he joined another exclusive group, becoming 1 of only 6 goalkeepers to score a goal in the Premier League.

And who can forget his trademark “Schmeichel Star Fish” save which he used to deny strikers on many different occasions.

Schmeichel produced many iconic moments whilst playing in England’s top flight, which is why he will be remembered as one of the best.

Do any other goalkeepers deserve to join Peter Schmeichel on the list of Premier League greats?

Clean Sheets – Top 10 Premier League Goalkeepers

Clean Sheets

David de Gea recently overtook Peter Schmeichel to become the Manchester United goalkeeper with the most Premier League clean sheets.

In doing so, The Red Devils stopper also made his way into the top 10 Premier League goalkeepers for the same statistic .

He has managed to keep his opponents out on 129 separate occasions so far in England’s top flight.

At 31 years of age, the Spaniard will still have his sights set on the 9 goalkeepers ahead of him on the list.

7. Edwin van der sar – 132

In front of de Gea is another Manchester United legend in Edwin van der sar. Whilst also playing for Fulham, it was in Manchester where the Dutch keeper enjoyed his best moments, winning the English title 4 times.

7. Tim Howard – 132

Tied on 132 clean sheets with van der Sar is Tim Howard, who also started his career in England with Manchester United. The American international was perhaps more remembered for his time at Everton though. His 10 year stint at The Toffees saw him make an impressive 354 appearances for the club.

7. Brad Friedel – 132

The third goalkeeper on 132 is also from across the pond. Friedel started his Premier League journey in Merseyside playing for Liverpool, followed by stints at Blackburn & Aston Villa before retiring at Tottenham. He also impressively holds the record for the most consecutive Premier League games (310)!

6. Pepe Reina – 136

The second Spaniard on the list & three time Golden Glove winner is none other than Pepe Reina. Reina was still playing in the top flight as recently as 2020 at the age of 37 for Aston Villa. But his 9 year spell at Liverpool was where he really made a name for himself.

5. Nigel Martyn – 137

Making the top 5 by one, with a career spanning over 17 years, is Nigel Martyn. Martyn spent his entire playing time in the English divisions with Crystal Palace, Leeds & Everton. The English shot stopper finally called time on his goalkeeping days in 2006 aged 39.

4. David Seaman – 141

Seaman one upped Nigel Martyn by hanging up his gloves at Manchester City, aged 40. Before this, he signed for Arsenal in 1990, and the rest as they say, is history. 3 Premier League titles later for The Gunners earnt him the name ‘Safe Hands Seaman’.

3. Mark Schwarzer – 151

Into the top 3 now, we have Australian goalkeeper, Mark Schwarzer. With a 20 year career in England, Schwarzer played for the likes of Middlesbrough, Fulham & Chelsea. He was also a part of the famous Leicester City squad that won the league in 2016.

2. David James – 169

With 572 Premier League appearances to his name, it comes as no surprise that David James makes the list. Playing for some of the top clubs in the country in Liverpool, Aston Villa & Manchester City, James really made his mark on the English game.

1. Petr Cech – 202

In the number 1 spot we have the man, the myth, the legend…Petr Cech. Cech left a real legacy in England, winning both the Golden Glove & Premier League title on 4 separate occasions. Whilst Cech is the only goalkeeper on the list to break the 200 mark, he also holds the record for the most clean sheets in a single season (24)!

Will anyone ever break this record?

FIFA 22 – Top 7 Rated Goalkeepers

The FIFA 22 ratings were released yesterday by the team over at EA Sports ahead of the games official release, later this month.

In a topic that always causes controversy, we were eager to see which keepers had caught the eye of the developers at EA.

Therefore, we decided to take a look at the top 7 highest rated goalkeepers in FIFA 22.

7. Ederson – 89 Overall

FIFA 22

Coming in at 7th on the list is Manchester City’s goalkeeper, Ederson. Getting his hands on both the Premier League title & Carabao Cup meant that Ederson would go from an 88 rated card, to an 89 in this years game.

6. Thibaut Courtois – 89 Overall

Courtois’ rating stays the same this year after Real Madrid were edged to the title by his former team, Atlético Madrid.

5. Alisson – 89 Overall

Alisson is the only keeper on this list who’s rating went down, going from a 90 rated card to an 89. This will likely be down to Liverpool’s poor title defence in the 2020/21 campaign, which saw them finish some way off the league leaders.

4. Gianluigi Donnarumma – 89 Overall

The 22 year old clearly made an impression this season, with his card going up by a massive 4 ratings! Donnarumma really made his mark at EURO 2020, with a string of exceptional performances in Italy’s road to glory.

3. Marc-André ter Stegen – 90 Overall

In what was a below par season for Barcelona, ter Stegen managed to keep his rating the same and ultimately make the top 3 of this list.

2. Manuel Neuer – 90 Overall

Following another dominant season in German football, Neuer was handed an upgrade in FIFA 22. This makes him one of only three goalkeepers to be honoured with a 90+ rated card.

1. Jan Oblak – 91 Overall

At the top of the list is none other than Jan Oblak. After a title winning season with Atlético, Oblak retains his spot as the best goalkeeper in FIFA for another year.

Did EA get it right this year?

5. Gianluigi Buffon – £32.6m
