UCL Goalkeepers– The departures of Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund in last nights Champions League action left us with the final 4 for this years competition.
Thibaut Courtois & Real Madrid will face off against Edouard Mendy’s Chelsea in the first Semi Final clash on Tuesday the 27th of April.
Manchester City & Ederson will travel to Paris the following day as they look to get past Keylor Navas and reach the Champions League final.
Here we take a look at the 4 remaining UCL goalkeepers and their journey’s so far in the competition.
Thibaut Courtois
Appearances: 10
Clean Sheets: 4
Goals Conceded: 11
Courtois will have to defeat his former club in Chelsea if he wants to get a shot at his first Champions League title. Real Madid have been dominant so far in this years competition in both group & knockout stages. Zidane’s side managed to top their group and cruise past Atalanta in the Round of 16, winning both legs. They also managed to defeat 2019 winners Liverpool in surprisingly comfortable fashion as they secured a place in the Semi Finals.
Edouard Mendy
Appearances: 9
Clean Sheets: 7
Goals Conceded: 2

Chelsea’s summer signing has had an exceptional campaign so far conceding only 2 goals in his teams run up to the Semi Finals. He has also kept the most clean sheets out of any goalkeeper left in the competition (7). The Senegal international will be hoping to win what would be a first major honour in his professional career.
Keylor Navas
Appearances: 10
Clean Sheets: 2
Goals Conceded: 11
Keylor Navas and PSG have arguably had the toughest route to the Semi Final’s having to overcome Barcelona and current holders Bayern Munich. His highlight so far will likely be saving a Lionel Messi penalty in the Round of 16, something only a handful of goalkeepers can say that they have done. Navas is the only goalkeeper left who has won the competition before, on 3 separate occasions with Real Madrid.
Ederson
Appearances: 9
Clean Sheets: 6
Goals Conceded: 3
Manchester City joined Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea last night to make it 2 English sides in the Semi Final’s. Ederson will be setting his sights high as ‘The Cityzens’ hunt a quadruple for the 2020/21 season. The Brazilian goalkeeper will be high on confidence, with his performances meaning that he is yet to lose game in this years competition. His next outing will be the toughest yet, where he will have to keep out the deadly attacking duo of Mbappe & Neymar if he wants to reach the final.

Colchester born Etienne Green had a dream introduction for AS Saint-Étienne this weekend as he made his debut for the Ligue 1 side.
With both the 1st and 2nd choice goalkeepers in Jessy Moulin and Stefan Bajic side-lined, Puel was forced to call upon the 20 year old.
Green certainly did not disappoint on his first outing, making himself the first Saint-Etienne goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his debut since 2006.
Not only did Green keep a clean sheet, but he also made a penalty save in a 2-0 victory against Nîmes.
Even more impressive is the fact that the penalty taker, Renaud Ripart previously had a 100% record from the spot until he faced Etienne Green.
The youngster, originally from Colchester, had been at the club since he was 9 and has came up through the ranks to earn his chance with the first team.
He has a French mother and an English father who named him after the team that he now plays for, in tribute.
Saint-Étienne posted a picture of a young Etienne Green as a mascot for the club stood with club legend, Jérémie Janot.
Janot replied saying “It was statistically impossible for Etienne Green to make his first-team debut with the green shirt…and yet.”
Focus will now be turned to Saturday’s game against Bordeaux where the young keeper will be hoping to continue his good start for ‘Les Verts’.
It is likely that Green will keep his place, with Moulin and Bajic both doubts for the next fixture.
Etienne Green went for a pair of Uhlsport Absolutgrip’s as he made his senior debut for Saint-Étienne.

We are back to Champions League action tonight as Real Madrid host Liverpool in the Quarter Final of Europe’s elite competition.
This will be the 7th occasion that the pair have faced off, with the last time being in the 2018 final where Los Blancos came out on top.
It is likely that Klopp will opt for Alisson between the posts whereas Zidane will look no further than Courtois, who has played every minute this season.
Can you name the 7 goalkeepers to have already played in this fixture?

Fashion designer Nicole Mclaughlin has recently collaborated with Puma to make a jacket made entirely of goalkeeper gloves.
Whilst this is the first time that we have seen a goalkeeper glove jacket, their have been previous crossovers between the goalkeeping and fashion world.
Below we take a look at some of the best collaborations to occur in recent times.
Puma Glove Jacket
Nicole McLaughlin’s goalkeeper glove jacket is the first piece to come as a result of her ongoing collaboration with Puma. The jacket is made up of numerous goalkeeper gloves that have been stitched together to make a truly unique design. Glove wristbands were also used in the production, to add Velcro fastening features to the design. As a one of a kind piece, the purpose of the collaboration is to “…highlight the potential of upcycling by using samples, deadstock and other PUMA materials.”.
Palace X Adidas Gloves
Skateboard brand, Palace teamed up with Adidas & Juventus in 2019 to release an entire capsule. After successful collaborations in the footballing world between the likes of Jordan & PSG it came as no surprise to see another club doing the same. The limited capsule included a pair of goalkeeper gloves which sold out quickly along with other items that had dropped. Although they are no longer available, you can still check the gloves out on the Palace website.
Off-White Gloves
In 2018 we saw world-renowned designer Virgil Abloh preview a pair of Off-White Nike goalkeeper gloves. The design featured some signature characteristics of the American brand as he put his unique stamp on the Nike Mercurial Touch model. Previews that appeared on social media showed custom pairs of the gloves being made for England goalkeepers, Joe Hart & Jordan Pickford.

Illan Meslier broke a 14-year-old Premier League record last night, becoming the first U21 goalkeeper to keep 8 clean sheets in a single season.
At just 20 year old, The Frenchman is seen as one of the top prospects in the goalkeeping world.
In this article we take a look at some of the up-and-coming young goalkeepers in the Premier League to keep an eye out for.
Marcelo Pitaluga
Club: Liverpool
Age: 18
Pitaluga was only 17 when he signed for Liverpool from Brazilian side Fluminense in October 2020. The young Brazilian had been recommended by Alisson’s brother who he had worked with in the Fluminense setup. He has already shown promise on the international stage, lifting the U17 FIFA World Cup with Brazil, 2 years ago. The future looks bright for Pitaluga who will hope to follow in the footsteps of fellow compatriot, Alisson.
Arthur Okonkwo
Club: Arsenal
Age: 19
The young academy graduate has been at Arsenal since he was 7 years old and is now setting his sights on challenging for one of the three goalkeeper spots at the club. He has recently started training with the first team and has made multiple appearances for England at U18 level. On first inspection, Okonkwo seems to be the perfect modern keeper standing at 6ft 4in and is comfortable with the ball at his feet.
Ákos Onódi
Club: Aston Villa
Age: 19
Unlike the first 2 goalkeepers on this list, Onódi has a first team appearance to his name. Due to a Covid crisis the young keeper was called upon to face reigning champions Liverpool in the FA Cup. Despite conceding 4 goals in the match he received many plaudits after making a number of good saves in the match. Coincidentally, Onódi had previously been on trial at Liverpool but was unsuccessful. The young Hungarian has also represented his country at U19 level and it may only be a couple of years until we see him in action in the Premier League.
Zan-Luk Leban
Club: Everton
Age: 18
Zan-Luk Leban signed for Everton in 2019 from Polish side FCB Escola Varsovia. The youngster had registered interest from some of Europe’s top teams prior to this, being a part of Barcelona’s academy and having trials at Manchester United. Leban’s Everton career has been hindered by injury’s so far but he is now back between the posts, having played 13 games in the U18 Premier league this season.
Marcus Dewhurst
Club: Sheffield United
Age: 19
Dewhurst is looking to follow a similar path to England keepers Dean Henderson and Aaron Ramsdale who have been given first team opportunities for ‘The Blades’. He only recently returned to Sheffield in January, after a loan spell at League Two Carlisle. Dewhurst has also made an impact on the international stage but not for reasons that would usually be associated with a goalkeeper. The Englishman got on the scoresheet for the U18’s, equalising late on against the Spanish national team.
