Hart flattered to be linked with England captaincy

Joe Hart has admitted to being flattered by his emergence as a contender for the England captaincy, but concedes that more senior players have stronger claims to the role.

Following the Football Association’s decision to remove the captaincy from John Terry, the Manchester City goalkeeper has been touted as a possible successor alongside Steven Gerrard, Scott Parker and Gareth Barry.

Hart, who made his senior debut as a 21 year-old against Trinidad & Tobago in June 2008, has established himself as England's first choice ‘keeper since the 2010 World Cup.

But despite being viewed as an integral figure in Fabio Capello’s Euro 2012 plans, the 24-year-old believes others will be ahead of him in the pecking order when the captaincy issue is resolved.

When asked whether he would accept the England captaincy if offered, Hart said: “Would you?

“I’m flattered to be linked with it, but I think anyone who’s having a consistent run in the England side is being linked with it but there are stronger candidates than myself.

"I’ve got a really important season, games for Man City and hopefully a couple for England coming up.

“That’s all I’m concentrating on at the moment. As long as I’m playing, I don’t care who’s captain.”
